An Article on The Salvation Centre- Cambodia

Over the past year the members and friends of MCC Good Shepherd have been extremely generous in their support of my work in Cambodia with the Salvation Centre Cambodia. Your generosity has brought hope and made an enormous difference to some of the worlds poorest and vulnerable children and their communities.. Over the next months I will try to tell some of the stories of the many people I have met and whose lives are changed by your generosity. Some of the stories will be tragically sad but some will bring great joy and much laughter. In this issue I want to give you some of the background of Salvation Centre Cambodia.

Salvation Centre Cambodia (SCC) is a Cambodian non-profit, non government organisation (NGO) established in 1994 to respond to the urgent needs of Cambodian people for education, care and support relating to HIV/AIDS. SCC works with Buddhist Monks, Nuns and Achars (Lay Leaders) to implement HIV/AIDS prevention and care activities and to stand up for the basic human rights of those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.  Through the compassion, commitment and dedication of a team of monks, staff, volunteers and generous supporters, SCC has been able to improve the lives of many people infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS, especially orphans and vulnerable children.

The SCC Trust Fund was established as a local and international fundraising mechanism as a way for SCC monks and staff to provide urgently needed support for children with poor access to education and families hit hardest by HIV/AIDS in Cambodia. This support complements the work of SCC’s main program, and allows SCC Monks to combine important psychological counseling and care with the provision of essential foods, clothing, educational supplies, vocational training or medical care to those in SCC’s communities most in need.  Children, either orphaned or adversely affected by HIV/AIDS, are a priority of the Trust Fund.  Sometimes this means providing them with schooling materials, vocational training, providing  transportation, providing education at their school to ensure that they are not discriminated against, or providing food assistance to their whole family.

  Project Goal

By the end of 2011, the SCC shall have made a significant contribution to HIV prevention and AIDS care and facilitation of local empowerment by working together with affected communities in Cambodia.
